WTF positively

Today has been one of those days that when at the end of it you go WTF? I had a car accident this morning and strangely enough I had a day dream the other day about meeting a sexy hot dr after having a fender bender (Mills and Bloom moment hahah) and the guy in the accident turned out to be a…wait for it..dr! Then I went to go report it at the poice station, I saw a woman that looked very familiar. I was in so much shock that I didn’t look properly and had to look again! It was my bestie Michelle! Wtf? Strangely enough she had an appointment at the police station but told me later that she has mixed up the dates and was actually not meant to be there at all. Seeing her made me relax A LOT!

My friend who is a mechanic happened to have time off and came to look at my car (sweety pie). Strangely enough he leaves for Namibia tonight…another twist. Car also doesn’t have that much damage…phew.

Then work was well madness as it seems people think today was Friday and last minute changes made me want to scream but hey, such is life. But..I heard today that I passed my advanced Excel course that the company sent me on! Yayness!

Get home and all our favourite programs are on TV and best of all for B, her dad actually bothered to call! Got B to bed and so its “Me Time” and what happens to be on..The Hunger Games. This movie helped me soooooooo much when I was getting divorced as it had just come out and I was feeling low and sad. I would put it on for the music and to remind myself that no matter how shit things were, at least I didn’t have to go through what they did and it helped me get stronger. I have a Pinterest board for it if you want to see some pics of them!

the hunger games

I also got a message this evening from a very dear friend whose silver lining has just started to show!

So all in all I learnt today that you have to be careful for what you wish for! There is also so much to be grateful for and with everything negative, there is always something positive! Did anything great happen to you today?

Cowgirl and scales

I realized this evening that I have not blogged in a while and that posting them in my head doesn’t exactly count…This month I’ve been a Cowgirl!

Lately there has been a show down happening. Let me set the scene: imagine a hot dessert town, the wind blowing and ladies gathering their children in their skirts to keep them away from danger. Two cowgirls approach each other, one with skinny jeans, a cowboy hat and a tight corset, the other round with stubby legs and digital eyes. They call the stubby girl “The Scale” and the other girl Abbi. Cue music and men coming out of bars to see the commotion. Abbi draws and shoots “The Scale” right between the eyes so that it drops 7kg off its figures but not before it takes a shot and hits the buttons on Abbi’s corset and out pops what was left of her tummy! Yes the scale and I have been fighting lately but I have managed to loose 7kgs. At the moment I’m on the 28 day diet and to be honest I’ve cheated so much I make an American politician look trustworthy! But all good things come to those that wait so I’m going to keep working on it.

Cowgirl takes on The Scale

I also fell head over heads for a cute boy with a cute smile and then found my feet. You win some you loose some but at least one learns…

B and I have been having some interesting adventures i.e we went camping and did some really Mommy and Me things. Lately though I have been a bit distracted with other things happening and she has been such a trooper about it! #Lovemykid!

Right that’s an update for now, I kinda got over what was stopping my blog before so it should get better now!

Sleep tight!

Col’Cacchio Pizzeria review

As you might have noticed, I haven’t blogged for a while. Its not for a lack of ideas, trust me I write a blog post most mornings on the way to work in my head. It is purely for a lack of time!

So it was nice for to have some Me time and go out with a girlfriend and have lunch! Oh and were we in for a treat. We went to Col’Cacchio Pizzeria at Canal Walk to test the Aegean Pizza that is part of the Col’Cacchio Pizzeria Celebrity Chef Series. This is an amazing initiative whereby money is donated from the sales of the pizza to charity! Not many companies doing this!

Col'Cacchio Pizzeria
Col’Cacchio Pizzeria

I had the Aegean pizza with a hummus base with mozzarella, spinach, feta, miso cured lamb, Peppadew® Piquanté Peppers, tahini mayo , phyllo flakes created by Jabu Mahlangu (Former Bafana Bafana, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder) and Ivor Jones (Head Chef Ivor Jones manages the day to day operations of ever award winning The Test Kitchen).

Col'Cacchio Pizzeria

The tahini mayo was delicious and the lamb was juicy and tender. The pizza was a little dry but I enjoyed it. My friend had a half and half pizza with deboned ribs and corn on the one side and chicken curry on the other which was scrumptious!

The nice thing about Col’Cacchio Pizzeria is that they also do wheat free and banting pizza and other food options! So you can have your pizza and not worry about the extra carbs!

My friend had the chocolate brownies and ice-cream and I tasted some of it. Oh My Word! Talk about wiping drool off one’s face! I had the banting cheesecake and while it was nice, after tasting the brownies, nothing can compare!

We had really great service, the plates were clean, food was hot and it was a very relaxing atmosphere! I would definitely recommend going there again! Have a look at their website to find a store close to you! Hmm now I feel like pizza

Cotton On Costumes

I love Spring! The smell of fresh flowers, green grass and walks at the beach. Ice-creams, picnics and braais without hoodies on. Lounging in chairs and cocktails with friends. Feeding the animals with B, going for long walks and smelling the daisies! And this isnt even Summer!

This also means pools, beaches and ponds and of course swimming! So B and I have been looking for a swimming costume for us both! Now don’t get me wrong but there are some costumes out there which will never see the time of day on my 4 year old! Maybe when she is 16 but at 4, there is more chances of pigs flying for the May Day Festival!!!

I really like the range that Cotton On has for kids  that can be mixed-and-matched. The girls swimwear range (for ages 2 – 8) includes one pieces, bikinis, tankinis, boardies and rashies in a range of bright, bold colours and pictures of  watermelons, lemon, cherries and ice-cream cones.

KIDS emma halter one piece R269.00

Palm trees, pineapples and octopuses are featured throughout the boys range (for ages 2 – 8) which boasts a pastel colour palette including peach, mint and yellow.

Cotton On KIDS’ tween category, Free by Cotton On (for ages 9 – 14), will also have a  swimwear range with similar prints and colours to the KIDS’ collection but with slight variations to the styles, catering to older, more independent kids.

The costumes are really cute and you can get them at your local store. If you are from Cape Town, have a look at the Cotton On Factory shops at Access Park in Kenilworth and the one in Kuilsriver (big bargains). You can also look on their website

R20 Monday Meal

I must admit that I didn’t eat todays Monday R20 Meal today…I was treated to all you can eat sushi with one of my besties instead! I am so full I think I could pop..hey I’ve had one piece of sushi in a month so I uhm over indulged a little. Might have to undo one of my buttons and my scale will stay in hiding tomorrow.

My ex husband is getting married this coming weekend and although I should probably be pissed off or something, strangely enough I wish him the best of luck! Had we been friends and not acquaintances who happen to have the same child, I probably would have bought him a card or sent him a message on the day. But that would only cause WW3 and I’m not in the mood for childish games. I’ve come along way from being angry with him and at one point hating him to where I am now. Don’t get me wrong, there are some days that I still pull my hair out at some of his actions but our paths splitting was one of the best things that could have happened to me. If you asked me that question nearly 3 years ago I would have told you you are mad but I am glad for what has happened.

So on to the meal….

French Toast

To buy:

Loaf of bread (R8.95)

6 eggs (R10.95)

From the cupboard:

Monday R20 meal

If you read my previous post you would see that I am on a weight loss mission. I have NEVER eaten so many fruit and veggies in my life or made so many choices on what I should put into my mouth! 33 is around the corner and I hope to be a sexier mama by then. In the past year I have dropped two pants sizes so it can be done! I won’t lie, I can’t stop thinking about a packet of chutney Simba chips but then I think of how long you have to work it off via training and then it just isn’t worth it! Sigh

On to the meal for the day. I also noticed that most of the meals are great for Meat Free Monday..extra bonus lol!

The meal is slightly adapted from a recipe by an amazing person: Merinda

Merinda’s Tuna pasta

Serves 2-4 people

Ingredients to buy

1 can of tuna in water

1 packet of pasta

Ingredients from your cupboard:

1 onion

1 tsp mixed herbs

Pinch of salt

5 tbsMayonnaise or tomato puree

How to:

  1. Cook the pasta as per the instructions on the packet (I put mine in a bowl with hot water, salt and pop it in the microwave for 10 minutes so I can do other things as well)
  2. chop up the onion finely
  3. drain the water from the tuna
  4. Drain the water from the pasta once it is cooked
  5. Add all the ingredients together
  6. Voila serve!

Checkers is currently having a special on tuna (R11.95) and pasta (R7.99) so it have a look out for that J

I still need attempt to make baby marrow pasta as with the banting recipes but that will come with time. We already eat cauliflower rice instead of normal rice and it makes me feel a hell of a lot better!

I have a problem

I have a problem.

Well now that it’s out there I will elaborate. It consist of one little word…Summer!

Although I was pretty good this winter I still managed to somehow get an extra kilo or two! This is mainly due to the fact that at my new job I sit most of the time and at my previous job I ran around like a banshee! Now there is nothing wrong with a kilo or two but we all know the summer is about shorts and cute tops and looking hot!

Since the 1 September I’ve been on the 21 Day Challenge which is no carbs and no sugar in your system. Yes ok so I have cheated a few times but overall I’ve managed to be pretty good! I feel a hell of a lot better, have more energy and when I do cheat, I feel gagga afterwards! I’ve also started to incorporate coconut oil into my diet and it has worked wonders on my little “winter pouch”. In the mornings I now have a smoothie and I’m trying to be healthy. It also helps that 98% of the people in my office are on diets.

Let me set the scene and you tell me if this is normal. It’s a birthday party at work with THE most amazing spreads of koeksisters, milk tart (gulp), muffins, cupcakes and an amazing looking chocolate cream ganache cake. Some people had a snack or two but by the next day the snacks were still left displayed on the table. Some of them started to disappear..but that blasted cake sat there and looked at me. Every time I walked past it, it whistled at me. Called my name. Who in their mind leaves a chocolate cake where I can see it. I ignored it for a while. I acted like it didn’t exist. Then a colleague had a giant piece and I thought of all the children in Ethiopia who would never have this opportunity and it is bad to waste food! I.ATE.A PIECE and I LOVED it! And then felt like crap afterwards! But at least I didn’t waste food heehee.

I love dancing but I was not put on this earth to be a fitness fanatic. I am a couch potatoe and it is taking some motivation to do the whole aerobics thing. So I am doing Zumba to make it more fun, putting my smoothies in martini glasses to make em look pretty and doing little things to trick my mind into the fact that it isn’t healthy…its pretty. That is my theory and I am sticking to it! I am also going to take part this weekend in a Zumba class that is going to be held in a underground parking lot at the local mall…baby steps! I have an attention span of a goldfish when it comes to exercise so if it isn’t fun or a challenge I aint gonna do it!

Wish me luck, so far I am down 2kg and a couple of cm! I’ve set myself the challenge that I need to loose 5kg by the end of the month! I have a treat that I am going to buy myself if I can achieve it! I’ve cut out a picture of it and it is on my bedroom mirror to motivate me! Gulp.

If you have any suggestions, mail me or leave a comment! Any help will do!

Monday R20 Meal

Monday R20 Meal

Monday R20 Meal is: Zucchini Fritters!

This is week two of my Monday R20 Meal series and this week I deiced to try a recipe that I have been looking on Pinterest so I made Zucchini Fritters. In South Africa, you could call them Baby Marrow Fritters but I’m not really a fan of baby marrow so calling them Zucchini sounds better to me!

I got the original recipe from here but I changed it slightly:

  • 2 cups of grated zucchini (about 500g with ends off)
  • ½ tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp mixed herbs
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 1 lg egg
  • ¾ cup all purpose flour (I used gluten free flour)
  • cooking oil or coconut oil for cooking

How to:

zucchini 3

  1. Wash the zucchini and cut the ends off. Using the large holes on a cheese grater, grate the zucchini or slice it by hand and put it in bowl .
  2. Combine the garlic, mixed herbs, salt and pepper in a bowl and mix it  together. Taste the zucchini and adjust the salt and pepper to your liking.
  3. Whisk an egg and add it to the zucchini along with ¾ cups of flour. Stir until everything is evenly combined. The texture should be similar to cake batter.
  4. Heat the oil or coconut oil until it is warm, test to see if it is warm enough by dropping a drop of batter into the pan. If it smokes, reduce the heat immediately.
  5. Take a spoon and spoon balls of the batter into the pan. When they become golden brown, they are ready to be turned over. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Serve warm!

Monday R20

I must say they are pretty yummy and very green heehee!

Monday R20 meal

Not everyone is millionaires and nor are we all super rich but this has lead me to wondering: can one can still make meals for R20 and under? So I took up the challenge and started looking around for meals. Hence the birth of Monday R20 Meal!

I like shopping at different places as you can get amazing bargains, if you know how to look. Checkers, for example, always sell their products that are just about at their sell by date after 6pm at night! I have bought bags of veggies that are marked down to R10 for cauliflower and broccoli, or R5 for a punnet of cut up mixed peppers! You might struggle to find a whole one for that price! If I don’t plan on using them that night, I pop them in the deep freezer and then I can use them when I need them. I love buying garlic bread like this as I pay R11 for one and when I have an impromptu braai, they work like a charm.

I love soup and we can eat it all the time in our house! Here is a recipe for soup that can feed 4-5 people (depending on how big your pot is of course). If you want some more recipes, have a look at my Pinterest Board Soup Recipes:

One packet of soup mix (R16-R18 at Checkers)

Chicken stock cube

Salt and pepper to taste

If the veggies aren’t cut up or peeled, peel and cut them up into small pieces.

Put the veggies in the pot and add hot water to the pot as far as is safe.

Add salt and pepper and the stock cube

Cook until veggies are done. Put the veggies into a blender or hand held blender and blend until the vegies are fine.

This takes about 20 minutes and is yummy! If you want it thicker, put some flour into a cup, add some hot water with it and mix it.

Voila! Soup ready and under R20!

Heart Month and healthy eating!

Heart Awareness Month

For Heart Month I am doing the 21 Day no carb or sugar challenge and so far I am on day 3. I can tell you that I am craving a chocolate like Pooh Bear craves honey! Feel like I am on a detox but they say that it gets better! Veggies, fruit and I are not the best of buddies but we are trying! Gimme a cheeseburger any day! But we have to be good…summer is coming and this mamma wants to strut her stuff.  9/10 of the people in my office are now eating healthy and one guy made it really clear for me! Yesterday G had a baguette in a plastic container and while he was out B wrote on it “This will take you three hours of cardio to work off”.  Today when the boss bought cake I asked B how long it will take to work off and he said “10km jog”. That cake did not touch my lips!!!

We have also made some changes in my house that’s been operational for a month now: no chocolates, sweets or “junk food” or TV watched or eaten Monday – Thursday and it seems to be working! B and I are a lot more active, she’s learnt to do hopscotch and you should see her go on the monkey bars at the park and school! Go B!

The Heart Foundation is also giving out some good advice for Heart Month and simple ways to change your lifestyle to getting healthier.

Here is what they advised:

Eat your rainbow colours

At least five portions of different types of fruit and vegetables a day helps you get a range of nutrients and anti-oxidants. Why not chop a banana over your breakfast cereal, or swap your usual mid-morning snack for a portion of fresh fruit.

heart foundation

Have a fish dish

Fish is an excellent source of protein and contains vitamins and minerals. It’s recommended that we eat at least two portions of fish per week, including one serving of oily fish. Oily fish include salmon, mackerel, trout, and non-oily fish like haddock, plaice and coley.

Saturated is overrated!

We need some fat in our diet, the amount and type of fat we’re eating is vital to acknowledge. The two types of fat are: saturated and unsaturated. Too much saturated fat can escalate the volume of cholesterol in the blood, which increases your risk of developing heart disease. Try to reduce your saturated fat intake, and select foods that comprise unsaturated fats instead, such as vegetable oils, and avocados.

Move more!

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is essential in maintaining a healthy weight, which is an important part of general good health. However, this goes hand in hand with moving more even by making small strides in your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the lift, get off the couch and walk the dog, involve the kids and play tag. Being overweight increases your risk of heart disease, being more active in the smallest way is a step in the right direction.

We need to drink about 1.6 to 2 litres of water every day to avoid dehydration. This is in addition to the fluid we get from the food we eat. Avoid sugary soft and fizzy drinks that are high in added sugars. Water infused with freshly cut fruit like lemon, mint, cucumber or strawberries is healthy and still appetizing.

If you are on the challenge, let me know and we can swop tips! J
