Last night for the first time, I went to Pilates and I actually enjoyed it! There wasn’t any of the “move into this position or that” and I actually felt like I was getting a workout! Strangely enough, today I don’t feel sore but tomorrow might be another day! I am hoping to make this into a more regular thing….hmmm.
My head has been filled with pink butterflies as I did a butterfly party for a friend! If I never see another butterfly, it may be too soon! The party was a lot of fun and the kids seemed to enjoy themselves! I did all of the décor and it took time but very easy to do. Thank heavens the wind wasn’t blowing again like the last party I did! The slight breeze made it look like the butterflies were flying above the table!
Here is a butterfly party packs tutorial and they take about 30 minutes to make! The amount of paper you need depends on how many party packs you have to make. The below is for 24 party packs. You might have some over as well that you can use for other decorations.
Butterfly party packs tutorial
What you need:
5 sheets of light coloured pink paper
5 sheet of darker coloured pink paper
Paper bags (I used white ones)
Cardboard from a cereal box
Print out the templates for the large and small butterfly and cut them out. Trace them onto the cardboard so that you have a stiffer template to use.
Trace the large cardboard butterfly onto the dark paper and the small butterfly onto the light paper. The closer you space them, the less paper you waste and the more butterflies you get out.
Cut out all of the butterflies that you have traced. Using the tippex, put small dots all along the smaller butterflies wings to make them stand out more. Leave them to dry.
Glue the large butterfly to the paper bag and leave it to dry. Once the glue is dry, fold the smaller butterflies wings in half with the dot side on the inside and then put some glue down the middle of the opposite side (without dots). Put this glue part down in the centre of the bigger butterfly.
Leave it to dry and then you can pack all your sweets, chips etc inside.
I have discovered that children seem to grow faster than a blink of an eye and their clothes seem to shrink faster than you can say “Mister Maker”! Here is your chance to win a pretty dress!
I have taken to letting B wear the “expensive/special” items more because otherwise she will never get to wear them and they too will join the box for clothes in case we have another baby. I must say that I am pretty lucky when it comes to buying things because I do shop around and like most parents, look for that bargain! The cheapest item I have ever bought was for 5c at a massive retail store when they had a sale and somehow it had been taken off the system so they had to charge me something! I did the happy dance in the middle of the shop and a few people must have thought that I am nuts! End of summer and winter sales you can get all sorts of lovely things for the next year but with the way that B is shooting up, sizes can be a gamble! B’s whole winter wardrobe last year was bought like this. I don’t know about you but I also don’t mind about second hand clothes, after all, they are well looked after and you aren’t going to get holes and nasty things so why not?
So here is a little giveaway for a girl under the age of 10. One lucky person can win a pretty dress, in the colour of your choice with the design in the picture made by Jeari and I will post it to you for your special little one! To enter is easy! Like Baby Bugs ‘n Berries on Facebook, refer a friend and leave a comment below! Competition closes on 4 March 2013 and is open internationally.
What does champagne, a vineyard at 9pm at night, hiking shoes, dust, full moon and some random droppings that I am hoping where a small goat? A Full Moon hike of course!
I like adventure and doing new things, routine can sometimes drive me nutty as I get bored which doesn’t happen easily so you can imagine how excited (also insert scared) I was to go on a pre-birthday! Full Moon Hike for Michelle’s 30th birthday last night!
I can tell you that I am not a hiker for the pure fact that I am terrified of snakes so I tend to “see” them wherever I walk in a mountain as I am in their turf! Hubby raised his eyebrows when he heard of the hike but was wise enough not to say much as he knows I will go to the end of the rainbow and back for Michelle. I don’t even have hiking shoes but after dusting them off, put on my gym pants and was ready to rumble!
The Full Moon hike is held once a month on Delevera Wine farm at the Dirtopia Trail Centre and cost R60 per adult and children under 10 are R25. We thought of taking Bella but to be honest, I would not take a kid up there under 5 unless you have strong arms and like to carry kids. and off we went for a picnic under the full moon!
We were slightly tired from the day so took the bakkie to the halfway point up the mountain and then walked climbed the rest of the way up! For a mom that is uhm fit from picking up and putting down a two year old I think I did pretty ok although I did use my camera a few times as an excuse to try to catch my breath and not look like a psycho! The view was amazing and it became quite chilly as we got higher up! The view at the top made my aching thighs forgive me for a few minutes while I watched the sun go down and the moon laugh at me. Michelle’s mom packed scrumptious sandwiches made with brie, salami and spinach and other mouth watering fillings and in the dark, our little group drank ice-cold yummy champers and sang a happy pre- birthday to a fabulous person. I hope Michelle felt special!
And then came the walk down.
Some people had torches and we used the full moon to guide us a bit so that it was easier to see where we were going. At one point we were surrounded by mist and I thought of the movie and mentioned to look out for any gorillas. This is Africa so I suppose one should say baboons? Instead of taking the bakkie down, some of us walked through the vineyards to the starting point, road lit by Iphone, drinking champers for our thirst and having a good old chat! I must say that it is something I will do again (bring champers) and it was really a lot of fun! My feet where covered in dust and I eased onto the couch when I got home but I will definitely do it again!
Today is Michelle’s birthday and I hope that it is a wonderful day for her! Her favourite movie is Beetlejuice so I baked a Beetlejuice cake with tombstones that say R.I.P 29! My mom helped me with it and she really is a superstar! Happy birthday Michelle!
I recently turned 30 and I did an Alice in Wonderland party come Made Hatters tea party theme and I was the Queen of Hearts! It was really a beautiful day but like all my really special days, the wind nearly blew us away!I made all sorts of cute decorations like a heart garland, a card garland, cards to throw on the table and to be honest; the wind was so bad that they lost some of their effect! The most important thing I realised was that the special people in my life were there and it didn’t matter that it wasn’t a 100% like I wanted it to look like, especially after the jolly table cloths kept whipping up and hitting the cupcakes so that the white table cloth became covered in icing! I just had to laugh and take them off!
What did I make?
I made this Maraschino cherry cake that I found here and to be honest, the icing needed a really strong beater so if you are going to make it, keep that in mind! The cake was moist, juicy and something that I had never had before but as I love cherries, I had to try it! You can colour the cake batter any colour that you want but as my colours were red and blue (I was the Queen of Hearts) I made it red!
I also made lemon-meringue cupcakes sprinkled with heart things which were really pretty and oh so yummy to eat! I like to make things that are different and so made all sorts of interesting cupcakes, decorated cookies with “Eat me” on them and coloured jugs of water blue so that it looked all interesting! I also took old jam, pickle and mason jars and filled them with sweets and designed labels to say “Eat me” and tied them on with little ribbons onto the bottles and filled them with sweets for the kids to eat (uhm the adults to eat!). I also made “Drink me” labels and tied these on ribbons and around the jugs! These I will put in another post so keep an eye out for them.
I also made cute bunny cookies and decorated them with Royal Icing and flooded them to look like real bunnies. If you do decide to make them, please remember that it does take a few hours to dry and to do! I used a chocolate writing pen to write words on the cookies so that they also said “Eat me” and with B around, she didn’t need too much incentive!
Now off to do the decorations for the pink butterfly party for a two year old girl that I am making! Wish me luck; I have never seen so many butterflies in my house at once!
Two of my favourite things are Bella and swallows so if you combine both of them, you will have one happy mama! This is what Drea Designs, who makes handcrafted jewellery, made for me! A Beautiful sterling silver pendant with Bella’s name on it so that I can carry it near to my heart for all to see. It is so shiny that trying to take a picture of it to show you was a mission as everything reflected on it! Andrea, the creative genius behind Drea Designs is someone that always has the most interesting jewellery on and the rings that she has are to die for! She hand-makes all her jewellery and custom pieces to suit her clients needs! Best of all, she doesn’t charge an arm and a leg so you know you are getting quality and good prices which of course this mama loves! She also fixes jewellery so of course I was even happier when she fixed a very special ring for me that has sentimental value and it came back looking prettier than when it went in. Add another tick in my happy checkbox!
Andrea is has kindly given one more swallow pendant for one lucky mom to win! Yes you can have a beautiful pendant with your child’s name engraved on it! How to enter? Valentine’s Day is almost here and it is a day or time you can be assured that everything will cost more, especially flowers! Wait till the 15 Feb and the rose that cost you R20 on the 14th will cost you R10!With prices being so high and budgets often being so long, I made a Free Love Coupons printable that you can use for Valentine’s Day or any other day!
Free Love Coupons printable can be printed in colour or in black and white, depending on your budget or your printer. I printed the black and white ones and made them prettier by colouring them in and putting them onto pretty paper. The craft shops and paper shops tend to have really nice paper and you can use that too! You can dolly it up in any way!
Time to do: 15 minutes
Cost: about R10 depending on the paper and ribbon you use.
Print the coupons onto the white paper and cut them out. You can colour in the hearts if you printed it out in black and white.
Glue the coupons onto the colour paper of your choice and remember to leave a space on the left hand side so that you can make the “binding “of the booklet. I used a black marker pen to make designs on the booklet as well to make it stand out more but this is up to you.
Use the punch, make two holes on the left hand side that you kept open.
Thread the raffia or ribbon through the hole to make a booklet. You can either tie a knot and a bow on the front or on the back just tie a knot.
Don’t worry, I know that I haven’t been here for a little while and that some people are probably thinking that I have dropped off the face of the earth but it is not so. It has been feeling slightly like that though lately with all the changes and things that have been happening and although no one has died, immigrated etc, to me it almost feels that way!
In the past week B, hubby and I have moved house and although most of the people who know me might not know this, but I have a thing about structured chaos! Now you might be thinking “what the hell?” and I can even hear my one bestie Francois saying this but if things are too much out of sync, I get a little wobbly especially if I haven’t got a clue where ¾ of things are. I can handle ¼ J this means that on the weekend this mama plans on unpacking (long story as to why I haven’t) and getting some normality back. I can see that it has been affecting little B too so action plan is to be made.
I also turned 30 and while some say that 30 is the “dirty thirties” I have been having issues with it aka I had the “turning 30 blues”. I still feel 18 and now and then I have to remind myself that I am not! Can one have two mid-life crises? I had one at 24 as I felt my life wasn’t where I wanted it to be on and by the following birthday it was so 25 was a breeze. So I officially had a mini one again! Oh well! I must say that the day itself was very special besides the fact that the wind messed with my well planned party décor and made me a little upset at first but hey, it’s about the people, not the décor and so I picked myself up and carried on. I realised that I have very special people in my life and while they are all different, they all have big spaces in my heart and I love them all dearly! I can’t imagine life without one of them and I thank the Lord everyday for each and every one of them.
The past few days have been full of challenges for me with more change (I need to ease into some things, others I jump in with both feet) and this mama has even worn coloured nail polish for a week! I normally only do clear, pink or French manicure and this week I have been sporting red fingernails! Toenails are not a problem and are always different colours but fingernails are usually as above mentioned so this is another way that I have been embracing change. Things have been blocked by incorrect infomation given and this has been causing panic for me, one person has played mind games with me and hurt me quite badly but I have gotten through it all and while I may still have a scar or two internally, this mama is starting to get back to “normal”. I have made my lists of things to do, starting to climb out of my little hole and I feel almost like a meerkat making sure that the area is clear before darting like a mad thing to the next spot.
So Little Blog, I’m back for good and with all the planning that I have been doing, things should be back to normal in the next few days and you will hear more about what has been happening!
I found this recipe on Pinterest and decided to try to make it at home! Of course I doctored it to suit my pocket and it was actually pretty easy! Hubby, being a fan of lasagne, loved it!
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves: 3 or 4 people
3 sheets of lasagne pasta
3 handfuls of grated cheddar cheese
1 can of chopped tomatoes
One onion (optional)
10ml mixed herbs
1 teaspoon garlic
Oil for frying
Salt and pepper to taste
Heat your oven to 190°c and grease the dish that you will be putting the mix into with Spray and Cook or with a thin layer of oil.
Break the sheets of lasagne pasta in half so that you have 6 “sheets” of pasta. I used a knife to crack them in half. Put them into a bowl of boiling hot water and cook them in the microwave for about 5 minutes until they are soft. Take them out of the water and put them onto a flat pan or counter.
Cut up your onion and fry half of it with the garlic in your pan. Once it starts browning, add the mince and 5ml mixed herbs, salt and pepper. Cook the mince until it starts to brown and take it off the stove.
Mix your can of tomatoes with the remaining herbs and onion and put ½ of this into the pan that you will be cooking the lasagne in.
Roll your mince into balls that will fit the width of the lasagne pasta. Starting at the end with the mince balls, start to roll the lasagne noodles up as you would with a carpet. When you get to the end, put the rolled up lasagne on top of the tomatoes in the pan with the last seam or last end facing downwards.
Cover the lasagne with the rest of the tomatoes mix and sprinkle cheese all over. Pop into the oven for 20 minutes or until cheese is light brown and crispy. Take it out and serve with garlic bread and a salad or on its own. If there are left over’s, it also freezes very well!
The past two days have been all about packing and figuring out where to put things for our move. Of course last night I needed some of the things that I had packed but to go through the effort of unpacking was crazy! During a well deserved break, I saw this recipe for Meatzza, which is a meat pizza, on Nigelissmaand though that it looked yummy. With a few adaptations, I managed to make it pocket friendly as well as dairy-free! Yay! It is very filling and so used the leftovers the following night to make burgers!
500g mince (I used lean to make it healthier)
1 teaspoon of garlic/ 1 grated clove of fresh garlic
3 tablespoons of Oats (not instant kind)/breadcrumbs
Cheddar Cheese (3 handfuls)
10ml of mixed herbs
1 400g can of chopped tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
Margarine (dairy-free) or Butter to grease pan
Set the oven to 220°C
Take a metal dish and grease it with the margarine/butter and put it to one side.
Open the can of tomatoes and using a strainer with a container underneath it, pour the tomatoes into the strainer so that the juice can run out. This is to stop the Meatzza from being soggy. Leave this to drain and continue with the next part.
Put the mince, oats/breadcrumbs, 5ml of the mixed herbs, salt and pepper to taste into a bowl and add the eggs. Using your hands, mix the ingredients together lightly until they are mixed and don’t over mix. Taking your metal dish, lightly push the mince mix into it like you would a pizza base. Don’t push hard as it will affect the base.
Once your tomatoes are drained, add the other 5ml of herbs, salt and pepper to taste and the garlic and spread this over the mince base as you would with a pizza. Lightly sprinkle the cheese on top of the tomatoes sauce. If you are making a dairy-free one, skip this step! Put into the oven for 20 minutes and then take it out and serve!
With summer here one can definitely feel the heat and I must say that I have been getting hot! It’s also the summer that I have been the brownest in 8 years and despite this, Bella is still browner than me!
Anyway with that in mind here is a giveaway for from Annique Sunblock called Safe –in –the-Sun SPF 30 and it has Green Rooibos in it . It is really a great product especially if you have little ones with allergies like Bella; it takes sun-sensitive skin into consideration and is fragrance free! What more could a girl ask for? Annique products work really well for Bella who is allergic to some perservatives and their shampoo for kids is amazing! I have even used it!
One lucky person will win a bottle of this sunscreen by leaving a comment below or on Baby Bugs ‘n Berries and mention what your favourite thing about summer is! Refer a friend to like Baby Bugs ‘n Berries, you will get an extra entry! Competition is open worldwide and closes on the 25 Feb 2013!
Many people don’t know this but I lived in the UK for two years and while I was there I fell in love with this company called Lush that sells the most amazing fresh handmade bath balls, perfumes, face treatments like masks and shower gels that will make you want to jump up and down like a kid! My bestie and I loved their stuff so much that we have a “standing order” with anyone we know who goes to UK to bring some things back for us. When we went to Dubai last night, one of my only “to see places” was to go the Lush shop in the one mall and I had to really restrain myself or I would have bought everything in the shop. The exchange rate helped with that.
And then I heard the most amazing news and got on the phone to call my bestie! Yes, Lush was coming to Cape Town and had opened a shop in the V&A Mall! Yes, Lush South Africa was here! Lord have mercy my poor heart nearly gave in! Of course I had to arrange a trip to go there to see what they had and hubby had to restrain me from jumping up and down like a banshee. I was so surprised as the prices are very reasonable and with the variety of things that they have, can easily fit into most people’s budgets.
The best thing about their products is that they are fresh and use wonderful ingredients in their products. The Ballistics or bath balls always come with surprises that make bath time really interesting. My favourite two balls did just that! The one released pink glitter into the bath as it fizzed and the other had hearts in it so my bath water was filled with little confetti hearts and rose petals! How romantic is that? Their solid perfumes are wonderful with my favourite being the Gorilla Perfume Vanilla which makes you smell really yummy! My new shower gel that I tried is called Snowflake and hubby says I smell like candyfloss when I wear it and he just wants to eat me up! They also have wonderful freshly made face masks for just about everything and you can also buy pieces of intricate soaps that are every colour that you can think of! They even have powders that can be used for lips, tints for cheeks and eye shadow!
Lush goodies are also great for presents, if you are willing to share! So do yourself a favour and go to the Lush South Africa shop at the V&A Waterfront! Have a look at them on Facebook as well! You will not regret it!
Hubby went away for business last night and to be honest although I missed him terribly, I think it was nice for him to have some time to himself , for Bella and I to have some alone time and of course for mama to have a little pamper time when B had gone to bed!
Of course this was after I had cleaned the house and made sure that it was ready for the next lot of people that are coming to view it tonight! We are moving out of our flat at the end of the month and had to find someone to take over our lease so it has been slightly nerve racking as we have 21 days to do it in and they are getting less and less! Someone has applied and has been given 80% approval but now it depends on the owner but I am praying that she gets approved! Once she is approved I can start to relax and then start on the wonderful mission that is of course packing! I have started uhm planning to do it but with less than 14 days until the move, I suppose that I should get off my bottom and actually start to do something! Oh happy days!
But back to the pampering thing I actually wanted to say! Sorry, just had salmon sashimi for lunch and it slightly distracted me! What I did want to say is that sometimes having a little pamper time is good for you and the fact that I got to watch The Vow without any complaints was even better although that movies makes me feel slightly teary and could have done with a nice cuddle afterwards! I think that I should make some more time for this and try not to make it once in a blue moon! Bella loved her pamper as we had a big bath filled with bubbles and nice smelling stuff after I let her put a Lush bath ball in! I want to try to teach her to treat herself and I suppose that I should be a good example of this (I write this with my tongue in cheek of course). Anyway mama will get there eventually!
Now off to go and stalk our rental agent to find out what is happening!
